Glaxo Smith Kline required an energy audit on its 70,000 m² Brentford headquarters due to complaints in its post occupancy evaluation and wanted also to invest in lighting controls. Power Plan Services undertook an energy audit and benchmarked the GSK building against similar UK buildings. It highlighted that while lighting was very efficient, the air-conditioning central plant was inefficient, representing 50% of energy use. 30% of the 3,000+ VAV boxes needed to be recommissioned and controlled. It also highlighted the potential to remove dedicated steam generation for humidity control. These actions and “pre-cooling” the glass building in the summer resulted in reduced complaints and an energy-saving of 17% in the first year.
