Stansted Airport
Problem Solving & Plant Optimisation
Stansted Airport’s technical air distribution challenges had resulted from the terminal’s large open concourse and its tree-like steelwork support structures, incorporating HVAC plant. Power Plan Services examined the original performance envelope of the assets, and how to make the terminal’s HVAC plant more reactive to the requirements of the time of day/year and occupancy. PPS experimented with settings on the high velocity jet diffusers and inverter volume controls to regulate air handling flow rates and improve comfort levels. AHUs have been refurbished, the controls strategy modified, and new actuators, dampers and CO² detectors installed. Free cooling has increased fresh air distribution and reduced heating and cooling demands. Early indications are of energy savings of 10-15%.
